The Beginning: Why we started homesteading – from suburban garden to rural farm life
It started out with a small garden plot in a suburban backyard – a few raised beds and some curiosity. Each year we expanded and eventually we outgrew our space. We were restricted by zoning, and were beginning to feel trapped. It took two years to find property that would better fit our dreams – Little Mustard Seed Farm in rural Connecticut. We increased our gardens, added berries and an orchard, a flock of sheep, hundreds of poultry, pigs, and a life of self-sufficiency. We didn’t know how far we would take it – maybe we still don’t.

The Reality: What Homesteading Actually Looks Like
Hopeful people focus on the “glamor” of homesteading, they see curated property, edited photos, and staged moments. The reality is much different, and we don’t think you should be disillusioned into chasing an ideal, or try to live up to unrealistic standards. There are many beautiful moments, but the truth is – you will have as much extreme weather as perfect days, as much manure as eggs, and experience every pest, fungus and disease on your farm.
We are real homesteaders, our story is real. And you can find it all on Little Seed Big Harvest.

The Meaning: What the Farm Teaches Us
What started as an urge to have a small garden, developed as our souls were enriched with each seed and each harvest.
We found treasure in the dirt, profound spiritual moments came in both giving and taking life. It affected us to our core, our understanding of life, and of sacrifice. Life’s hardships seemed so small as the sun set with our hands in the soil.
In homesteading, your view of life, spirituality, family and community change. Watching the seasons change, watching your young seedings and baby animals grow year after year, seeing the circle of life in full each season. Understanding parables at a deeper level. We are closer to creation, and can see the beauty and tragedy all at once.
